I’m very excited to announce a new series/project that I’ve been spending quite some time working on:

Nothing Stranger Than Truth is an investigation, a documentation, and a witnessing of some exceptional people doing some exceptional work.

By both photographing the person in their environment and and asking 7 questions, I hope to gain a glimpse at who they are and what they do.

I will be continuously posting these portraits and interviews as I do them, so make sure to follow the blog so you don’t miss them!

First up in the series is the very talented songwriter Seth Jones. Click here to check out the photographs and see what he has to share about music, creativity, and what drives him.

Last week, my buddy Seth Jones asked me to shoot a recording session for an artist named Richard Jordan in a studio on music row, definitely one of my favorite experiences so far because I just got to be a fly on the wall and document some insanely talented people in their element.

They just tracked drums and bass that day, but I'll be around for when they finish the songs and already look forward to getting to photograph that time as well.

I recently had the great opportunity to work with recording artist Amanda Stott. Making extraordinary use of the most beautiful Saturday since late last summer, we went out to photograph her for some promotional shots and her album artwork.

Luckily, she is letting me share a bunch of the photos now even though the album won't be out until late May. I'll do another post around then with some more photos that I'll keep secret so as not to ruin the surprise of her artwork...

Now that Alissa has recently gotten married (Congrats!!!), I've finally got the green light to post some of the photos. I really fell in love with the black and white photographs out of the set and decided post them specifically (you know, for congruency's sake...or something)

The last season of my beautiful wife's and my lives has been pretty focused on the dauntingly large amount of work that goes into the many aspects of making music.

A Special and HUGE thanks to our friend Betsy Jones who came out on saturday to help get and even shoot some of the photos. WIthout her, I'm sure 3/4 of the time out there would've been wasted spent arguing about why we chose a day with snow on the ground to shoot outdoors.

2011.01.23 - Twice Baked Potatoes

Made twice baked potatoes last night. With as much time as it took, it was incredibly easy. However, next time I'll probably use less bacon (a sentence you may never hear me say again.)

---

INGREDIENTS
4 large russet potatoes, about a pound each
Olive oil
1/2 cup sour cream
1/2 cup milk
2 Tbsp butter, softened
1 Tbsp cream
Cheddar and bacon version
1 cup grated cheddar cheese
4 strips bacon
1/4 cup chopped green onion
Blue cheese and chives version
1 cup crumbled blue cheese
1/4 cup chopped fresh chives
1/2 teaspoon salt
METHOD
1 Bake the potatoes. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Scrub the potatoes clean under running water. Poke each potato in several places with the tines of a fork so that when the potatoes are cooking they don't explode. Rub the potatoes all over with a little olive oil. Place directly on the middle or top rack of the oven. Cook for 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until the potatoes are cooked through. They should give a little when pressed.
If short on time you can bake the potatoes in the microwave, 10 minutes on high heat for 2 potatoes, 15 minutes for 4 potatoes. The skins of microwave baked potatoes aren't nearly as crispy, so you may want to rub a little olive oil on them and finish them in a conventional oven at 400°F for 10 minutes.

2 If you are including bacon as one of your mix-ins, while the potatoes are cooking, cook the bacon strips in a frying pan on medium low heat for 10 to 15 minutes, or until crisp. Drain on paper towels. Let cool. Crumble.

3 Allow the potatoes to cool to touch. Slice the top third lengthwise off the potato. Use a spoon to scoop out the insides, forming a potato "canoe", leaving about 1/4 inch of potato on the skin.
Alternatively you can slice the potatoes in half, lengthwise. In this case you may want to bake an extra potato so that you will have more potato filling to mound into the potato boats.

4 Place the scooped out potato insides, sour cream, milk, cream, and butter into a large bowl. Mash with a potato masher. If you want a creamy texture, beat with an electric beater until desired consistency. Note, do not over-beat potatoes, they can turn glue-y.

5 Mix in the extras with the potatoes. Reserve some of the extras to sprinkle on the tops of the potatoes. Spoon fillings into the potato shells. Sprinkle with extra toppings.

6 Heat oven to 350°F. Place potatoes on a roasting pan and bake 15 to 20 minutes until heated through.

Serves 4 to 6.

Third and Seventh is a FULL CG animated short movie by Alex Roman in which not a single frame was filmed or photographed.

Though the threat that beautiful stuff like this may change the industry and leave videographers and photographers unnecessary, I can't help but be insanely inspired at the work and pure genius that went into this.

Do yourself a favor, turn down the lights, go to this video's page on vimeo (to watch it in hd), set it to full screen, and have your mind blown.

Just bought myself "Faces Of A Vanishing World", Joey L's new show. I've loved Joey's work for a long time now and love reading about/seeing photos and video from his travels.

His new show documents his return trip to Ethiopia a year after he had first gone to take portraits of the different tribesman in the region. He returns not only to take more photographs of them, but to give large prints to the people that he met and took photos of on the first trip. Check out the trailer below:

Been on vacation out on Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia for the last week enjoying a much needed break from the world and our daily grind and resting, laughing, and having numerous adventures on the lake with my in-laws. While I was home in California, I had the privilege of doing an impromptu shoot of my sister so she could get her book together to do some modeling. While it seems like going against the grain of my brotherly nature to say, she is very beautiful (people think we're twins...so you know...that must mean something for me ;) haha)

Anyways, we all set out for an adventure into the Santa Cruz Hills for the morning and grabbed some photos of her. Even though being forced to shoot at high noon brought some harsh light and annoying shadows, we had a bunch of fun (which is way more important).

2010.08.16 My First Published Photograph

You've probably heard me talk about the wonderful Anne Jackson before, amazing author, cross country cyclist, one of the few bloggers worth following, and a great partner in crime to have when quoting 30 rock to end e-mails with.

Back in January I took some photos of her for her upcoming book, Permission to Speak Freely. Well the release date of the book is drawing near (although I hear that it ships from amazon on 8/18/10) and I finally got my hands on a copy and am proud to see my first published photograph.

You can order the book online or pick it up in any major bookstore near you on 8/31/10.

As excited as I am to finally see my photograph in/on something other than my website, I am even more excited to start reading this book. If you've EVER felt that there is something you can't say in church, this book is for you. Anne takes a brave leap and steps out from behind the mask of her sunday best to show us that it's safe to come out from behind ours.

I had to shoot this with my cell phone camera.

why?

My DSLR broke last week. It was very sad day. I took it to about two or three different places that all told me that there was no way to repair my poor nikon.

Anyways, until some miraculous provision happens, I am stuck without a digital slr. Wanting to save film (and money), I am left armed only with the camera on my cell phone. I've cancelled a couple of shoots, since I can't show up and whip out my phone, but until I can get back on my feet, I'll still shoot with the best camera that I've got, whatever one that I have with me.

Story: A Conference for the Creative Class

A few months ago, the amazing Ben Arment asked me to shoot some still photos for an event that he was putting together called "Story: Unfolding". It was a broadcast round the table discussion about the importance and influence of story on several different very creative people's lives. From authors to musicians to photographers to humanitarians to record label founders, the power of story and being a part of the greatest story possibly told influences all of us, whether we embrace it or not.

Much more than a broadcast, STORY is a 2 day conference for people (especially the creative kind) to learn more:

It took all morning and into the afternoon, but I've officially cleaned/organized the apartment. I even set up the guestroom/office and made sure that I can have a whole wall to shoot against since I'm too cheap to buy another seamless set up right now.

10 days ago, I got married.

Much more than 10 days before that, I decided that on the wedding day, I didn't want to let the very rare opportunity of a very specific point of view pass me by, so I'd carry one of my 35mm film cameras (my trusty Fm2) and shoot a roll of film (I did, however, pass the camera to my Dad for a shot or two of the ceremony).

Music City Unsigned's 3rd Anniversay Concert: Justin Branam and Trent Dabbs with Friends

Last night was Music City Unsigned's 3rd Anniversary and to celebrate there was an incredible concert at Third and Lindsley in downtown Nashville with Justin Branam and Trent Dabbs with some friends (Katie Herzig, Amy Stroup, Matthew Perryman Jones, Andrew Belle, K.S. Rhoads, and Erin McCarley). It was such a privilege to be able to get in and shoot some photos of the event and my favorite Nashville musicians for MCU.

Random Dukes of Hazzard Car

On my way home from work the other day, I look out to my left and notice that there is an orange car up on this hill in the middle of this huge field. I'm not sure if it was moved there, or if it was carried there by the flood that we had this weekend, but I stopped, grabbed my camera, and investigated it. Turns out that it's a replica of the car in Dukes of Hazzard!

Got to spend the weekend up in Willmar, MN for a friends wedding. While we were there, I got to stay with some very very close friends that I actually used to live with up in Minnesota and spend some time with them and their son.

2010.04.03 Tin Pan South the 6:30 show

Working my way through the Tin Pan South shows that I got to shoot last Saturday. Both shows had an amazing line up so I wanted to give each show their own separate blog. The 6:30 show featured the incredible Matthew Perryman Jones, Katie Herzig, Thad Cockrell, Daniel Ellsworth, and Butterfly Boucher. They each took turns playing their songs for a good couple of hours and provided me with plenty of great opportunities to capture the amazing atmosphere that their music brought out in the venue.

A Short Visit at Home

A few weeks ago, the weather was just right. By just right, I mean 29 degrees, between snow flurries, and just generally rough. That was the day that Vanita and I decided to go out, throw my camera on a tripod, and take our own engagement pictures. Here are a few shots from the day:

Betsy Jones

Betsy is an absolutely phenomenal singer and even in the short time that I've known her, she's proven to be an even better person. A month or so ago, I called for help in building my portfolio in the form of willing subjects and Betsy answered my SOS. Hopefully, we'll be seeing Betsy in front of my camera more often as I push myself to learn and practice.

Anne Jackson

Yesterday, I got to go out armed with nothing but my Nikon, a 50mm, and natural light and shoot one of my absolute favorite Nashvillians and authors, Anne Jackson. Anne is the woman behind the book Mad Church Disease, which is a hands down MUST read for anyone in ministry and is currently working on her new book, Permission to Speak Freely. Her blog is one of the most read christian blogs in the world (one that I've definitely been blessed to read daily), but you really really couldn't find a nicer more down to earth person with a heart as big as hers. The thing that makes Anne even more of a champ is that unlike a lot of blog posts from photographers hyping up the subjects of their shoots, I actually mean EVERY word of it from the bottom of my heart.

I also once saw her drinking Dr Pepper that was heated up out of a travel coffee mug. She let me smell it. So...you know...yeah.

Chris and Rebekah's Wedding

I have been looking forward to this wedding for a while, not just to shoot it (which only came about recently), but because the bride and groom are such amazing friends. This was definitely one of my favorite weddings to shoot so far. Maybe it was because I'm finally starting to feel a little comfortable shooting weddings, but I am putting my money on that since there were SO many friends there, it felt less like work and more like seeing people that I really care about having a good time and documenting it.

Anyways...here are a few shots from the festivities:

Sorry about the lack of posts here! I will post about some of my recent work soon, but things have been an absolute whirlwind out here in Nashville!

Most importantly, this happened:

That's right, Vanita and I are engaged now. Whoop whoop!

Anyways, more to come (actual work stuff). I've had the insane honor of assisting the great Lee Steffen for a couple shoots this last week or two and it has been a blast and I learned SO much. Make sure you check out his work, it's phenomenal!

Shooting a wedding in KY next weekend and another big project that just came up just a few days after! I have to play that one close to the chest for now, but I will definitely be sharing that soon!

Josh and Kayla's Wedding 09.19.09

This was the second wedding that I've ever shot, the first that I was solo and lead on (the first, I was a second shooter). It helped tremendously that I was working with such a great and freaking hilarious family. The day was long, but it was just undeniably perfect weather (Vanita got terribly sunburnt during the ceremony).

It was such a privilege to be a part of Josh and Kayla's day and to be able to capture it for them and now I'm so pumped up for the next 2 weddings in the books (Chris and Rebekah's and Kevin and Julie's). I am coming for you.

Josh and Kayla's Wedding - Sneak Peak

To say that it's been a whirlwind of events this last weekend, would certainly be an understatement. On friday, Vanita and I drove up to the wedding rehearsal in Iowa (she played/sang in it), spent the night in Wisconson, drove back to Iowa (only an hour or so) for the wedding/reception, drove to Chicago to spend the night with our good friend, spent half of the day with her and drove back to Nashville that afternoon/night, crashed at about 2am, woke up at 630, and now I'm here at work waiting for some video projects to finish rendering.

I can't wait to dive in and open all of my shots from the wedding in Lightroom, but until then, here are just a few images:

Fall is Coming

Coming up on a big week with a shoot or two (assisting on one and shooting one of my own) and capping it off with a wedding up in Iowa next weekend. I am so stoked to actually have stuff to shoot rather than go on walks, but every once in a while a walk with my camera is a lot more productive than I thought it'd be.

I need to take better “out of the window” pictures while in the car. Regardless, it’s been about 2 days since we’ve gotten back to Nashville and I already want to get out and hit the road again.

I guess I just need to constantly be moving. I love having this amazing city to come “home” to, but I am VERY excited about getting out there and shooting in some awesome places like Chicago, Texas, Kentucky, and possibly even California this fall.
